About Us
Redheart Appaloosas is a UK‑based Appaloosa Stud nestled beneath the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire. We specialise in the breeding, showing, and promotion of 5‑ and 6‑generation Appaloosas, with a dedicated focus on preserving and advancing true Foundation bloodlines.
The aim at Redheart Appaloosas is to breed quality, not quantity….
Our breeding programme is intentionally small, selective, and focused on producing Appaloosas that embody the very best of the breed.
Every horse enters the show ring before being considered for breeding.
Judge feedback, professional critique, and real‑world exposure provide invaluable insight into each horse’s:
Soundness — both mental and physical
Temperament — willingness, trainability, attitude
Conformation — correctness and long‑term suitability
A season or two competing under varied conditions proves their resilience, adaptability, and overall quality. Only those who demonstrate the right attributes progress into the breeding plan.
All foundation stock has been carefully imported to strengthen and diversify our gene pool.
We do not line breed (shared common ancestors) and do not inbreed (closely related ancestors).
This approach enhances vigor, temperament, conformation, and colour expression, and we are consistently delighted with the traits passed from both sire and dam.
Our goal is to preserve and enhance the traits the breed is celebrated for:
Versatility
Athleticism
Stamina
Heart and determination
Our programme is built on quadruple registration, aiming for all eligible stock to be registered with:
British Appaloosa Society (BApS) All foals are registered Grade A or Stud Book.
“In 1987 a grading system was implemented, which made provision for a six generation “journey” to stud book status.
Present day, 21st Century now sees our sixth-generation horses currently being produced and it is exciting to consider that we are now breeding the first acclaimed pure-bred Appaloosa in Britain.”
Appaloosa Horse Club UK (ApHC UK) All foals are passported and registered on the A register.
“The ApHC of America was formed in 1938 by Claude Thompson of Oregon in order to preserve the wonderful Appaloosa horses in America that were originally selectively bred and cultivated by the Nez Perce people in the nineteenth century. The ApHC is today recognised as the international ‘mother’ society of the Appaloosa breed.”
Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) All foals are registered in FPD and or GAP:
Foundation Pedigree Designation (FPD) — aiming for 100% FPD (30/30 Appaloosas in a five‑generation pedigree) and Generation Advancement Programme (GAP) — registering eligible foals with six generations of Appaloosa lineage.
“Famous explorer Meriwether Lewis was appropriately impressed with the breeding accomplishments of the Nez Perce, as noted in his diary entry from February 15, 1806.
Their horses appear to be of an excellent race; they are lofty, elegantly formed, active and durable…some of these horses are pied with large spots of white irregularly scattered and intermixed with black, brown, bay or some other dark colour.”
Foundation Horse Registry (FAHR) Foals that are eligible are registered, the must be minimum of 75%.
FAHR is the only by-blood registry for the Appaloosa, promoting breed development through selective breeding in hopes of reaching the lofty goal of our founder, breed discovery and breed recovery.
To Protect, Preserve, Perpetuate and Promote the bloodlines of the true Appaloosa Breed.
