The Appaloosa Vanish Roans!
Varnish Roan — and the Varnish Roan with LP
(LP/lp or LP/LP, negative for the PATN1 gene)
One of our absolute favourite coat patterns here at the Stud is the Varnish Roan. There is something uniquely captivating about the way these horses transform over time — a living, shifting canvas shaped by the Leopard Complex.
Over the years, we’ve both bred and purchased black and bay Varnish Roans, and every single one has developed an extraordinary, individual pattern. No two are ever the same, and watching their coats evolve from foal to adulthood is one of the true joys of Appaloosa breeding.
Below are a few examples of those remarkable changes — from their solid beginnings to the beautifully varnished, character-rich coats they mature into.
