The Redheart Stallions Receive Appaloosa Horse Club UK (ApHC UK) Accomplishments

Our boys…

We have always believed in proving our stallions in hand and under saddle, this gives a great insight of what the professionals believe and having well-handled and well-mannered stallions make breeding so much easier for us.

This year they all received certificates from the Appaloosa Horse Club UK, acknowledge their accomplishments in 2021, thank you ApHC UK.

2023, DFR Patahas Redheart (Blu) will start his show jumping campaign.

The future is exciting with our next 10 year Breeding plan in place, we shall not take anything for granted but having a plan gives us something to aim for.

Having a plan in place helps us focus on the future and not get wrapped up in the sole destroying winter months!

The Redheart Mares are carrying the 2023 Redheart Foals.

Our four broodmares are in for the winter…

Talisman’s Redheart (Ghost) is confirmed in foal to Hevan’s EV Catorrius (Reus).

We store our stallion’s semen mainly as a backup, we are very realistic knowing anything can happen to horses within a blink of an eye.

It is an expensive way to breed and not always successful but using Hevans EV Catorrius frozen semen with Ghost will hopefully give us our Reus filly, one day!

Admitted to Three Counties Equine Hospital this year with her 2022 foal at foot she was as inseminated under the expert eye of Vicky Savage – BVSc MSc CertAVP DipECEIM MRCVS European Specialist in Equine Internal Medicine.

Ghosts first pregnancy scan was positive but showed a double ovulation had occurred, meaning she had twins, one embryo at 16mm and the other at 19mm. It’s not rare for a mare to double ovulated (we wouldn’t intentionally risk any mare to carry twins) but what is rare is she caught again 3 days after insemination. Frozen semen usually will only remain viable inside the mare for 6-12 (or perhaps even 18) hours.

Vicky “pinched” the smaller embryo and Ghost was re-scanned to ensure the embryo was still there, implanted into the uterus and developing, at 34 days another scan ensured a heartbeat was seen.

We are delighted Ghost has been confirmed with a healthy single pregnancy and carries the full sibling to Really.

We REALLY can’t wait to meet this foal!

Redheart Pascallius (Evee) crossed with DFR Patahas Redheart (Blu) can only produce black or smoky black foals, she is confirmed in foal for 2023.

We are very much looking forward to meeting the UK’s next GAP 6 foal.

Peyres Catori Cat (Catori) is confirmed in foal to DFR Patahas Redheart for 2023.

Breeding Appaloosa’s is like choose a Random Revel, you just don’t know what you are going to get (although I can confidently say I can pick out the  chocolate buttons and Malteser’s but struggle with the orange cream, coffee cream, caramel and chocolate raisins).

This mare exceeds our expectations every delivery by what she produces, she is our least Foundation mare but her “get” will produce Foundation Appaloosa’s registered with FAHR if crossed to the right FAHR mare/stallion.

One of the most charismatic equines I have ever had the pleasure of owning.

Caricks Redheart (Myka) is confirmed in foal to DRF Patahas Redheart (Blu) for 2023.

The Appaloosa is a Breed not a colour and the non-Characteristic (lp/lp) horses like our Caricks Redheart is an absolute blessing for producing 100% characteristic Appaloosa foals (LP/lp) when mated with our homozygous (LP/LP) stallion Blu.

Here is Myka with her three foals by Blu, she can only produce spotted bay or buckskin foals.

We look forward to the safe arrival of her fourth full sibling in 2023.

Redheart Reality – Debut Dressage

Redheart Reality (aka Tally) is out of our very precious mare Princesse Pascale (aka PP), he is by our first homebred horse Hevans EV Cataorrius (aka Reus) who has just exceeded all our expectations in every way. We have only used this mating once because Reus is related to our other mares and you can’t cross two non-characteristic Appaloosas so that’s Myka out of the picture. but moving forwards, we now have more options due to our breeding plan.

We were hoping for  Tally to be a filly to retain, to enable us to carry forward the blood line but as Tally was a colt it was his destiny to be sold and it wasn’t long before Jenna found him or he found Jenna?

Jenna unfortunately had an accident (a very nasty break to the leg) which prevented her from continuing Tally’s education but the positive outcome was Tally was turned away after being broken in,  this is by far the best situation for any young horse, enabling them switch off mentally.

Jenna has worked extremely hard to get back into the swing of things (I for one totally understand the fear of riding after breaking your leg, learning to walk again is an achievement in it’s self never mind riding a horse), but she has DONE IT!

Today, we went to support Jenna & Tally in their first debut out competing at Glebe Farm Equestrian Centre competing in the G.F.E.C Dressage & Trailblazers 1st Round.
We have regular contact with Jenna via social media but to see them both in the flesh today was very emotional, Tally looks fabulous and their relationship is strong, we are so very proud of them both, they will and can only continue to go from strength to strength.

We are expecting a full sibling soon, we pray everything goes to plan as a REPLICATION of Tally would just be divine…

Remy & Really Restrained via DuraCorral

When mares give birth, their natural instinct is to protect their foals, we would never turn a mare and foal out within a herd from day one and what makes our situation worse in March 2022 is the wet weather and muddy ground. We dare not risk any infection via an umbilical chord with the mud, therefore we have decided to invest in yet more DuraCorral panels to split the ménage into two…

This means not only does our ménage serve as a riding arena (when the daylight hours permit after normal human working hours) and it also refrains our horses eating/chewing the wooden rails but the best benefit at the present time during this awful weather is, it has allowed us to turn the two mares and foals out each evening, whilst we clear out their stables.

We are so close to that extra hour of daylight and irrespective of daylight the mares and foals are turned out daily , providing their bodies and minds with what we consider only of a positive nature.

Here are some images when Remy met Really, well to be honest the mares didn’t allow them to meet but nearly…

Redheart Mares – Counting down the foaling days 2022

The 5 Redheart broodmares are looking great, feeling fine and totally relaxed in their routine as we start to count down the days to foaling and pray for the safe arrival of our 2022 foals.

We are expecting two foals from Reus and three foals from Blu, all have full siblings except Reus x Ghost, this will be our first ever Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry (FAHR) foal from our Catori line. It goes without saying, all we want is a healthy new-born but we would be blessed to see a filly delivered. A filly would be retained for our future breeding plan with Fire or Blu, continuing our path of the UK’s Foundation Appaloosa Stud.

Pure Appaloosa Breeding – Future Bloodlines

Our Stallion – DFR Patahas Redheart certainly is a huge asset to our breeding plan.
Disregard the performance record, ignore the genetics reports, forget about conformation, and overlook the temperament and you are left with The Pedigree…

These horses in Blu’s pedigree are listed on The Appaloosa Horse Club Hall of Fame (established in 1986 to recognize the unique contributions and positive impact individual horses have made on the ApHC).

This stallion shaped much of South Dakota’s Appaloosa industry as his leopard colouring made him the first of his kind in the state, which drew much attention to the horse. The stallion’s sudden popularity caused a surging interest in Appaloosas. The stallion was named high-point performance and high-point halter stallion in South Dakota; he also won open reining classes in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and Rapid City, South Dakota. The ApHC UK National Show 2109

The Appaloosa Horse Club UK National Show is one show we greatly look forward to each year. A place where the Club members meet and share a common passion – The Appaloosa Horse, whether it be Purebred, Registered, Part bred or on the Characteristic Register, we support, help and encourage one another and share the highs and lows of our Appaloosa lives.
A huge thank you to all the helpers on the day and the Directors Sue Feast, Auriol Thorne, Kim Tuscany Sands and Elisa Spivey for their continued hard work behind the scenes x
Here at the Stud we’ve been very occupied preparing the horses for this annual event. Regent and Reality our two-year-old gelding’s are experiencing a growth spurt, a time when they look very much out of proportion, so on this occasion we decided to leave Reality in the field and take Regent, Reus and Blu.
A very special thank you to Rachael Simmons, Katherine Pennels and Will Hunt for looking after the horses recently whilst we have been on our holidays!
Photography courtesy of Barbara Evans, Lian Wood, Virginia Rider and Simon & Anita Coates Simon Coates Photography xx

This was Redheart Regent second show and we eventually got him up to shower and braid and release him from his baby sitting task, we didn’t expect the day to unfold so well!

The first class was the “Most Colourful Other”, where he picked up a 2nd place, his next class, Part bred young stock on the triangle, we were absolutely delighted with our partnership, he moved very gracefully around the cones and won the class, later, he won his gender/age class and took Reserve Champion Part Bred. We couldn’t ask any more from this young man.

DFR Patahas Redheart first ridden show, anyone who follows us knows Blu was backed here at the stud late January this year, he was then ridden away by
a local friend Skye Houldsworth, at her premises for a few weeks before being turned away for 6 months. At the end of July we decided to bring Blu back into work, he was a total angel to get back on and continued to be ridden for two weeks by our very good friend Will Hunt whilst we were away on holiday, so, although only being in light work, we decided to see if Blu could replicate exactly what he was doing at home but under a “show” conditions.

Blu finished his in hand showing days last year, we decided to take part Saturday to “test the waters”, before contemplating riding him on the Sunday. He stood very quietly watching the world go by with a junior Amelie House. However he did persistently try to grab his chain in his Stallion Classes but the main aim was for him to ignore all those horses around him… he passed!

Sunday brought us pure joy, such a well-mannered boy, although very green he presented the Judge with his huge soft personality and filled the atmosphere with smiles, I will never forget the cheer we received when he won his Ridden Youngster Class, so proud of him. The next class was a Walk/Trot Equitation which he passed with flying colours in our book as he stood next to and walked passed two mares, a fantastic start to his ridden career as a stallion.

Working full-time doesn’t really allow you to run a stud and school the ridden horses but we do our best! Reus gets ridden as often as possible and occasionally schooled on a flat piece of common land on the Old Hills, so it’s not his fault he’s not as well schooled as he should be (we are desperate to get our manège constructed ASAP) but throughout the year we have made the most of any local clinics offering pole work and or flat work. It certainly has paid off, Reus is certainly starting to make a nice shape and gave us some nice moves.
Reus is in his second year, being ridden in English and Sunday was our first test in the ring over a jump, albeit only 2ft6 he certainly gave it some space! He won his class, executing a basic pattern before and after the jump. Happy Days!

Very much looking forward to next year!
